Who are we?
The Friends of Evergreen Library was founded in the late 1980's and, after a few years became "inactive". Then, in the early 90's the Friends re-established themselves and in 1997 incorporated officially as the Friends of Evergreen Library, Inc. - a non-profit California corporation (recognized as a 501c3 tax exempt organization). Since incorporation the organization has been honored by several awards from city council, the San Jose Library Commission and the SJ Library Foundation. It has also been recognized multiple times by District 8 and the City of San Jose for excellence in community service.
The Library itself is unable to provide community programs because of time, personnel and monetary restraints. We, the Friends of the Evergreen Library, try to fill that gap. We advocate for and enhance the library system by providing opportunities for our community to invest in their public library by donating their time, money, and books. For over 20 years, the majority of our funding for library programs is provided through our book sales.
Friends also provide a conduit for our community to advocate for a great San Jose Library. Community members are always needed to remind not only the city council but others in the community of the important role our library performs.
Friends of the Evergreen Library support our community through various library events,
Currently the Friends:
• Operate a used book store within the Evergreen Branch Library
• Sponsor educational programs for children and adults, including the Summer Reading Program and author book lectures
• Promote library services to the public
• Music events ranging from opera to blues
• Plus many other performances, programs, & workshops (we do support the gardening club)
